Marcel Breuer is credited with designing the first tubular steel chair in 1925, when he was a furniture master at the influential Bauhaus design school in Dessau, Germany. This innovation inspired a number of designers, including Renè Herbst. After immigrating to the United States, Breuer went on to design a number of iconic pieces of furniture as well as buildings, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
