Renè Herbst was a leader in the "functionalist" movement and a founding member, along with Le Corbusier and Jean Puiforcat, of the Union des Artistes Modernes, an organization created in reaction to the Art Deco style. This particular chair was created by Herbst for his own Paris apartment in 1928, and represents one of the earliest uses of bungee-cord elastic bands for seating.
