On Oct. 19, Cooper-Hewitt will launch its third National Design Week, an initiative that aims to draw national attention to the ways in which design enriches everyday life, through outreach to school teachers and their students, and partnerships with design organizations across the country.
This year the ceremony includes the People's Design Award, determined by an online voting system. Starting September 22, the public can nominate and vote for their favorite designs at www.cooperhewitt.org. The winner will be announced live at the National Design Awards Gala in New York City.
The centerpiece of National Design Week is the National Design Awards Gala on October 23. The awards were established in 2000 to broaden awareness of the role of design in daily life.
During National Design Week, Cooper-Hewitt will offer free admission to all Museum visitors. Additionally, the Museum will host a series of free public programs in the Target National Design Education Center and Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden.

The Educator Resource Center features design-focused lesson plans, as well as chat rooms and blogs for teachers interested in incorporating design into their curriculum. The ERC will launch a series of new activities that coincide with the People’s Design Award. These lesson plans are aligned to national standards for all grade levels to help teachers learn ways to promote innovation, critical thinking, visual literacy, and problem-solving across the curriculum.
The National Design Awards and National Design Week are made possible by the generous sponsorship of Target.
