Chris Kucinski and Owen Osborn, a.k.a. Critter & Guitari, are a Philadelphia-based design duo specializing in unusual devices for electronic music. Their new Kaleidoloop is a pared-down device in a psychedelic package. It was designed to allow the user to gather and manipulate sounds simply and easily, in the way a visual artist can collect and collage with images.

They’ve also created a robot that interacts with a musical carpet and a hacked TV that responds to user-manipulated tones. Many Critter & Guitari instruments have a synesthetic quality, playfully combining the senses of sight, touch, and sound. The duo centers its design practice on the belief that music is about exploration. “We decided we weren’t going to give anybody any instructions on how to use our instruments,” said Chris in one interview. “There’s no prescribed way of using them.”
