Olivia Cushing Whitridge (1783-1876) was born to a prominent New England family with ties to Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine. She married William Whitridge, and the couple lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It was in New Bedford, a whaling town, that Olivia C. Whitridge created this “Mariner’s Compass” patchwork medallion. The Mariner’s Compass pattern “was one of the earliest named American patterns and was popular with quilt makers up and down the Eastern seaboard, especially in the 1840s and ’50s.” [1] The pattern is a circle with radiating points that is reminiscent of “compass roses and wind roses, both similar in configuration, founds on maps, sea charts, and magnetic compasses.” [2]
The design includes a circle of plain ivory cotton in the center, on which is written in dark brown ink: “Olivia C. Whitridge, New Bedford, 1853.” It was most likely intended to be part of a “Friendship Quilt.” In the nineteenth century, friendship quilts were a part of the social fabric of life at all economic levels. One common practice was for the friends of a bride-to-be to come together to create a quilt as a wedding present. Each quilter was responsible for making one square; the completed and signed squares would be joined together to create a quilt. A friendship quilt might also be made for a friend who was moving away, to remind her of her dear friends back home.
