Through the on-going program A City of Neighborhoods at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum (CH-NDM) and in partnership with DreamYard, The New York Public Library (NYPL) and the New York City Learning Network (NYCLN) worked together to engage students as citizen designers and journalists. Using GPS enabled hand-held devices with videos and picture capability, the youth participants gathered information, to build their knowledge and understanding, to identify and address design challenges in their communities, and to prototype and share solutions. Using local New York City neighborhoods as setting, students participate in project-based, real-world learning activities that empower the learner to make their own decisions and become engaged community members in their own right. In January 2011 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s inauguration as the 35th President JFK50.org was dedicated to the legacy of the presidency of John F. Kennedy and commissioned by the JFK Library Foundation. View Video Here One important part of this website is the “legacy gallery” which features short interviews with individuals talking about the work they do and how Kennedy’s enduring legacy has helped to shape the world we live in today. Youth participants of A City of Neighborhoods were interviewed to discuss how design can affect and improve a community.
